The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios was born on May 24, 1950, at Kottarakkara in Kollam district of Kerala. He joined St. Aloysius Seminary Trivandrum in 1967 and had his philosophy and theology training at St. Joseph's Seminary, Thiruchirapally, Tamil Nadu, from 1970 to 1978. He was ordained priest on April 2, 1978. He has served in the parishes at Kirathoor, Manjathoppu, Vimalapuram, Susaipuram.

Father Koshy Varghese was appointed vicar of the mission stations at Padi, Perampur and Thiruvottiyoor in Chennai in 1983.

In May 1996, he was appointed vicar general of archeparchy of Trivandrum. On April 15, 1998, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the archeparchy of Trivandrum by Pope John Paul II. He was ordained after the name Joshua Mar Ignathios on June 29, 1998.

Mar Ignathios served as president Kerala Catholic Bishop's Council. He also chaired various commissions.
