Bishop John Hsane Hgyi was born in Pyinkadoe Mayanchaung Village, Kyaik Latt Parish, Pathein Diocese, Ayeyarwaddy Division on Dec. 15, 1953. He is the son of Mahn Benedict Ja Aye and Daw Zita Chit Pan, both ethnic Kayin. He entered the minor seminary in 1970 at Mayanchaung Village, Pathein Diocese. He studied philosophy and theology at St. Joseph Catholic Major Seminary in Yangon from 1976-1982. He was ordained a priest on March 7, 1982. After ordination, he served as assistant priest of Myaungmya Parish from 1983 to 1985, Thayetchaung Parish from 1985-1990 and as parish priest of Ywe-gone parish from 1990 to 1991. He studied the subject of spirituality in San Carlos University, Philippines from 1991 to 1994. After he returned from the Philippines he served as spiritual director for one year and as rector from 1995 to 2001 at St. Joseph's Catholic Major Seminary (Philosophy) in Pyin Oo Lwin. He served as Rector of St. Joseph's Catholic Major Seminary (Theology) in Yangon from 2001 to 2003.
On March 22, 2003, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Pathein. His installation as Bishop of Pathein was on Aug. 24, 2003, when Charles Bo, SDB, the previous ordinary, became Archbishop of Yangon.
Bishop John is now responsible for the staff and precincts of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Myanmar (CBCM), he is Chairman of the Episcopal Commission for Ecumenism and Substitute Member of the CBCM.
