The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Joseph Guo Jincai
Joseph Guo Jincai, bishop of the Diocese of Chengde, was born in February 1968, in Chengde, Hebei. Bishop Guo, who served as a deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress, is currently the vice president of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association and China Committee on Religion and Peace.

He was ordained Bishop of Chengde, in the province of Hebei, on Nov 20, 2010, by Bishop Peter Fang Jianping of Tangshan Diocese. Bishop Guo Jincai was excommunicated latae sententiae, for not acquiring a pontifical mandate during his election as the bishop. The excommunication was later lifted on Sep 22, 2018, by the Holy See.
