The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

The Vatican announced the appointment of Father Peter Sebastian Goveas as the new bishop Bettiah on July 22, 2017. Bishop Goveas was vicar general of Bhagalpur diocese at the time of appointment.

Bishop Goveas was born on Feb. 8, 1955, at Hosabettu, Hospet, Mangalore, in southern India’s Karnataka state.

After completing his secondary school, he entered St. John’s Regional Minor Seminary, Bhagapur, to become a priest for the diocese of Bhagalpur. He had his philosophy studies at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi, and at Morning Star College, Barrackpore, West Bengal state and his theology at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi.

He was ordained priest for the Diocese of Bhagalpur on Dec. 9, 1983.

Bishop Goveas served the diocese in several capacities as parish priest, administrator of schools and diocesan consulter. In 2013 he became the vicar general of the diocese of Bhagalpur, an office he continued until named bishop.
