Pope Francis on Feb. 8, 2016, appointed Shorot Francis Gomes as auxiliary bishop of Dhaka while he was serving as vicar general of Sylhet diocese. He succeeded Auxiliary Bishop Theotonius Gomes, who retired in April 2014.
Born on Dec. 15, 1965, in Hashnabad, he completed his primary and secondary schooling from Holy Cross High School, Bandura, and entered the Little Flower Minor Seminary in Dhaka. In 1984, he joined Holy Spirit Major Seminary and was ordained priest on May 31, 1990.
He has served as rector of the Little Flower Minor Seminary, Bandura. From 1998 to 2002, he was in Rome, pursuing a doctoral degree in moral theology.
Back in Bangladesh, he served as the parish priest of Nagari and Tejgaon for three years until 2005. He was the vice-rector of the Holy Spirit Major Seminary, until being named as vicar general of Sylhet in 2012.
