Bishop Joseph Gan Junqiu was born in April 1964. He graduated in the year 1991, among the second batch of students who completed their priesthood formation at the Central and Southern China Theological and Philosophical Seminary in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province. He was ordained a priest on May 19, 1991. He taught and served as the dean of studies and general affairs in the Wuhan seminary until 2000. He later returned to Guangzhou diocese, to become the diocesan chancellor and director of the Church property management committee within the curia. He was ordained with a papal mandate and the Chinese government's recognition, as the bishop of Guangzhou on December 4, 2007.
