Bishop Sumlut Gam was born on June 19, 1953 in Sadung, Panghkak Parish, the eldest of nine children of Patrick Sumlut Lat Maw and Maria Lamau Jun. His primary education was in Sadung and Sinlum. He visited middle school in Loije and Banmaw and high school in Myitkyina town. He studied for the priesthood at St. Joseph's Catholic Major Seminary in Yangon and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Myitkyina on March 29, 1981. He obtained his B.A (History) in academic studies in 1987.
After ordination he was appointed assistant pastor of Myitkyina Cathedral Parish and was also assigned to prepare Waimaw area to be established as a Parish. In 1984 he became Rector of St. Columban's Minor Seminary. In 1988 he was appointed Diocesan Procurator. In 1991 he was assigned to Panghkak as parish priest and responsible for the development of Frontier China Mission. In 2004 he was appointed director of diocesan Karuna Services of Myitkyina.

Banmaw was part of Myitkyina Diocese until on Aug. 28, 2006 when Pope Benedict XVI created a new Diocese of Banmaw suffragan to the Archdiocese of Mandalay and appointed Msgr. Raymond Sumlut Gam as the first Bishop of Banmaw. On Nov. 17, 2006 the new Diocese was blessed and on the Nov. 18, 2006 the new Bishop of Banmaw Msgr. Raymond Sumlut Gam was ordained and enthroned by His Grace Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the Apostolate Delegate to Myanmar.

Bishop Sumlut Gam came from a farming background and always has held a keen interest in agriculture and farming. For recreation he enjoys fishing, hunting and visiting friends. He is a very committed pastor and has boundless energy for all activities involving social development. He feels very at home to be with the poor, the needy and the marginalized and he strongly believes this to be call, his commitment and his life's journey as bishop.
