The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Julian Winston Sebastian Fernando, S.S.S. was born on Jan. 16, 1945 in Moratuwa in the diocese of Colombo. He joined Blessed Sacrament Fathers' community on Aug. 1, 1973 and was ordained a priest on Sept. 6, 1975. He was appointed Bishop of Badulla on March 3, 1997and his Episcopal ordination took place on June 14, 1997.
He was the first Asian to become a bishop from his congregation, which had three other bishops, for North America, Latin America and Africa.
Bishop Winston was the national executive secretary of the 2nd National Pastoral Convention 1993-1995 to carry out the Vatican Council II decrees in Sri Lanka. He is the Chairman for Catholic National Commission for Laity of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka.
