Bishop Peter Feng Xinmao of Hengshui (Jingxian) was ordained Jan. 6, 2004 as coadjutor bishop of Hengshui diocese in Hebei province. He immediately succeeded Bishop Mathias Chen Xilu when he died on Jan. 16, 2008 after having been in a coma for six years.
Bishop Feng was appointed by Pope John Paul II and was approved by the government-sanctioned Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China. The bishop obtained a master's degree in canon law in 1990 at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He is the first bishop ordained since 1980 - when religion was revived in China - to have obtained a postgraduate degree.
The bishop has been teaching English and philosophy at Hebei Catholic Seminary in Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, about 270 kilometers southwest of Beijing, as well as at Hengshui diocese's minor seminary. Bishop Feng told UCA News after his ordination that his main task is to upgrade the education standard of both the minor seminary and the Religious women's congregation in the diocese.
The bishop serves as director of Jinde charities in Shijiazhuang, provincial capital of Hebei where the nationwide Catholic non-profit organization is based,
