The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Peter Fang Jianping was born in Lulong county on Nov. 25, 1962. He studied at Hebei Seminary 1984-1988 and was ordained a priest in 1989. He was ordained Coadjutor Bishop of Tangshan together with four other bishops on Jan. 6, 2000, the Feast of Epiphany, without papal mandate. He was recognized by the Vatican two years later and became the ordinary of the diocese on June 8, 2008. However, he was still the coadjutor until Nov. 2010 in the record of the open Church authorities. (Photo: the bishop as an Olympic torch bearer in 2008).
