The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Reynaldo Gonda Evangelista was born on May 8, 1960 in San Jose, Mabini, Batangas to Benjamin C. Evangelista and wife Rufina G. Gonda. He has seven siblings.

In 1967 he joined elementary school but in 1997 came to St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary, where he completed his high school. Soon after he joined St. Francis de Sales Regional College Seminary and completed philosophy. From 1981 to 86 he studied theology and was ordained a priest on February 26, 1986.
A year after ordination he did a course on Pastoral Counseling in Ateneo de Manila University. In 1998, he also did a course of Seminary Formation from Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.
He served the diocese in various capacities. He also served as professor, prefect, vice rector and rector of the St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary, Lipa City. He was also rector of the regional major seminary and a member of archdiocesan commission on clergy.
On 11 December 2004 he was appointed Bishop of Boac diocese in first appointment as bishop.
Pope Francis transferred him from Boac to Imus on April 8, 2013. Bishop Evangelista was installed as the fifth Bishop of Imus on June 5, 2013.
