Bishop Paul Daisuke Narui, S.V.D., was born on Sept. 24, 1973, in Iwakura, in the diocese of Nagoya. He entered the minor seminary of the Society of the Divine Word in 1986. He took religious vows on March 9, 2000. From 1997 to 2001, Bishop Narui studied moral theology at the University of Nanzan, obtaining a bachelor’s degree and a licentiate.
He was ordained priest on March 10, 2001, in the church of Nanzan, Nagoya.
Bishop Narui first served as assistant in the church of Akita, diocese of Niigata (2001-2004), and then attended a formation course in the United States (2004-2006).
He has also served as prefect of postulants (2006-2008); member of the provincial commission for justice, peace and integrity of creation (2006-2013); member of the commission for migrants (2006-2014); secretary of Caritas Japan, (2006-2015); provincial counsellor (2008-2013) and head of distribution of aid during earthquake of 2011 (2011-2015).
Pope Francis appointed him as bishop of diocese of Niigata, on May 31, 2020, and was ordained on Sept. 22, 2020.
