The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Alarcon was born in Daet, Camarines Norte on August 6, 1970 and ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Caceres on November 9, 1996.

Bishop Alarcon served as president of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines prior to his appointment as prelate.

He succeeds now Archbishop Gilbert Armea Garcera who was appointed to head the Archdiocese of Lipa in February 2017.

The 48 year old Alarcon will be the fourth bishop of the diocese.
