The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Mar Joseph Arumachadath, MCBS, was born on April 10, 1960, in Uppukandam in Idukki diocese. He joined the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1978 and was ordained priest on May 7, 1988.

He did his philosophical studies at St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye, and theology at Jnanadeep Vidyadeep in Pune, Maharashtra. He earned a doctorate in dogmatic theology from Leuven University (Belgium) and has published his thesis on "Church as Community of Jesus' Disciples." He served as a retreat preacher and later as secretary to the MCBS superior general before being named rector of the MCBS minor seminary in Athirampuzha, Kerala. From 2002 to 2005, he headed the MCBS' Emmaus province. He was appointed the first bishop of Bhadravathi when the diocese was created on Aug. 21, 2007, and he was ordained bishop on Oct. 25, 2007.
