Bishop M. Devadass Ambrose was born on Oct. 6, 1947, in the village of Ammapet near Thanjavur. He was ordained priest on Aug. 5, 1974, and appointed bishop of Thanjavur on July 18, 1997, the third ordinary of the diocese. His episcopal ordination was on Sept. 24, 1997. Bishop Ambrose was the vice rector of St. Peter's Pontifical Seminary in Bangalore before his appointment as the diocesan prelate. He is also now chairman for the commission for Catechetics of the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council.
