Bishop Arulappan Amalraj was born on Dec. 4, 1953, in Coonoor. He was ordained priest on Dec. 26, 1980, and appointed bishop of Ootacamund on June 30, 2006. His episcopal ordination was on Aug. 9, 2006. Bishop Amalraj was installed on Aug. 9, 2006. He was the parish priest of Coonoor before his appointment as the diocesan prelate.
