The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo was born on May 8, 1955, in Gormara, Dhekiajuli parish in Tezpur diocese. He was ordained priest on Jan 26, 1986, in the diocese of Tezpur. He was appointed bishop of Tezpur on Dec 3, 2007, and was ordained on March 2, 2008. Before becoming a prelate, Bishop Toppo was the chancellor and financial administrator of the diocese. He is presently the chairman of education commission in Northeastern Regional Bishops’ Council.
