The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Guillermo Afable was born on April 3, 1951, in Davao City. He had his elementary and high school education at the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Davao University. He completed his college seminary training at St. Francis Xavier College Seminary in Davao City in 1972. He completed theology studies at St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary in 1976. He was ordained priest on April 24, 1976, and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Davao by Pope John Paul II on April 2, 2001. His episcopal ordination and installation were on July 12, 2001. The same pope appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Digos on April 24, 2002, and he was installed on June 21, 2002. He was installed as second bishop of the Diocese of Digos on Feb. 11, 2003
