~ Pope Francis said in his homily of the Mass at the Vatican on March 14, formally opening the yearlong celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of Catholicism’s arrival in the Philippines.

A country of 7,641 islands at the sea of southeast Asia with a population of 109 million, of which more than 10 million are migrants living in almost 100 countries across the world.

Archbishop Andrews Thazhath was born at Pudukkad, Trichur on Dec. 13, 1951. He was ordained priest at Nandhikkara for the eparchy of Trichur on March 14, 1977 and was nominated auxiliary bishop of Trichur and titular bishop of Aptuca on March 19, 2004, by Pope Jon Paul II. He was ordained bishop on May 1, 2004, at Lourde's Metropolitan Cathedral, Trichur. He was nominated metropolitan archbishop of Trichur, succeeding Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, on Jan. 22, 2007, and was installed on March 18, 2007, by Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. He is the president of the Oriental Canon Law Society of India.
