The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop Joseph Mitsuaki Takami, S.S. was born on March 21, 1946, in Nagasaki. He was ordained a priest on March 20, 1972, and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Nagasaki on Jan. 23, 2002. His episcopal ordination was on April 29, 2002. Pope John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Nagasaki on Oct. 4, 2003. His installation took place on Dec. 14, 2003. He has been the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan since June, 2016.
