Archbishop Joseph Nguyen Chi Linh was born on Nov. 22, 1949 at Ba Lang parish in Thanh Hoa province. After he was accompanied by his family to move to the south in the 1954 exodus, he studied philosophy and theology at local seminaries in Hue, Nha Trang and Da Lat in 1962-1977. In 1977, when he left the Pius X Pontifical Institute, he returned to his family in Nha Trang diocese and did many jobs for a living until he was ordained a priest on Dec. 20, 1992. Bishop Linh furthered his studies at Institute Catholique de Paris in France in 1995-2003 and obtained a doctorate in philosophy. After he returned to Vietnam, he taught at the Stella Maris Major Seminary in Nha Trang. Bishop Linh was named bishop of the northern Thanh Hoa diocese on June 12, 2004 and his episcopal ordination was on Aug. 4, that year. On 26 October 2016 Pope Francis appointed him as the new Archbishop of Hue. On Jul 23 2022, Pope Francis appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of Nha Trang.
He is able to speak English, French and Latin except his native language.
