The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop Mar Mathew Moolakkatt was born in Uzhavoor in Kottayam district of Kerala on Feb. 27, 1953. He was ordained priest on Dec. 27, 1978. He joined the Vallombrasan Benedictine Monastery and made the final profession on Dec. 5, 1998. He secured a doctorate in canon law from Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome. He was nominated bishop of Holler and appointed auxiliary bishop of Kottayam on Dec. 28, 1998. He was consecrated on Jan. 6, 1999. Pope John Paul II appointed him as co-adjutor bishop of the eparchy of Kottayam on Aug. 15, 2003. He is the member of CBCI commission for justice, peace and development. He also serves as the chairman of the Synodal Commission for of St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor.
