The Holy Father appointed Bishop Benny Mario Travas of the diocese of Multan as metropolitan archbishop of Karachi on Feb 11.

Archbishop Travas was born in Karachi in 1966 and was ordained priest in 1990. He holds a licentiate in canon law from Pontifical Urbanian University of Rome and has served in a number of pastoral and academic roles in the archdiocese of Karachi.

Archbishop Travas was appointed as bishop of Multan on May 29, 2015.

He became the Archbishop of Karachi when Pope Francis accepted the resignation of His Eminence Cardinal Joseph Coutts.

The Archbishop also served as the rector of the St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Karachi and Vicar-General of Karachi archdiocese and vice president of the Catholic Board of Education.

He has also served as a professor of canon law at the National Catholic Institute of Theology in Karachi.
