The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim was appointed on July 3, 2014. He was the dean of Studies at the Major Seminary in Penang at the time of appointment.

Bishop Julian Leow was born January 3, 1964, in Seremban, under the archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur. He studied at New South Wales University of Sydney, earning a bachelor's degree.

He worked in Sydney and then in Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Singapore. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary in Penang. He was ordained a priest on April 20, 2002, for the archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.

After his ordination, Bishop Julian served as a vicar of two parishes before he assumed the office as a dean of studies and trainer at the major seminary of Penang.

Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur was vacant since December 13, 2013, after the resignation of Archbishop Murphy Nicholas Xavier Pakiam for reasons of age.
