The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Antony Kariyil was born on March 26, 1950, in the archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly and made his first profession in the CMI congregation in 1967. After completing priestly studies in Poona and Bangalore, he was ordained in 1977.

He was the principal at Christ College, Bangalore, and served as chaplain of the Syro-Malabar community at Resurrection Church in Bangalore.

On Aug. 30, 2019, Bishop Kariyil was appointed as archiepiscopal vicar of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.
