Archbishop Elias Gonsalves was born on July 4, 1961, in Chulne, Maharashtra state. He was ordained priest on April 11, 1990. He has a bachelor's degree in history and economics from Bombay University and a diploma in social development and community building from the Coady Institute in Nova Scotia, Canada. Bishop Gonsalves has served as pastor of several parishes and was the dean of Raigad deanery. On July 11, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Amravati diocese. Before his appointment as bishop, he was the director of social work of the archdiocese of Bombay.

Pope Francis appointed Bishop Gonsalves as archbishop of Nagpur on Dec. 3, 2018.
