The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil was born on Nov. 7, 1954 in Daegu. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1981 and appointed as auxiliary bishop of Daegu on March 23, 2007. His episcopal ordination was on Apr. 30, 2007. He served as diocesan administrator from Aug. 18, 2009.

He was elevated to archbishop of Daegu on Nov. 4, 2010, and was installed on Dec. 20, 2010.

Bishop Thaddeus Cho is president of the Committee for Social Communications of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea (CBCK). Also he is member of the Episcopal Commission for Clergy and Religious, Episcopal Commission for Social Affairs, Special Episcopal Commission for the Reconciliation of the Korean People and Special Episcopal Commission to Promote Beatification and Canonization of the CBCK.
