The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop Petrus Canisius Mandagi, MSC, was born in Kamangta, North Sulawesi, on April 27, 1949. He was ordained priest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Dec. 18, 1975. He was appointed bishop of Amboina on June 10, 1994 and his episcopal ordination took place on Sept. 18, 1994. Bishop Mandagi’s motto is Nil Nisi Christum (Christ alone, Galatians 2:20).

On Aug. 7, 2019, Rev. Mandagi was appointed as apostolic administrator of Merauke archdiocese. On Nov. 11, 2020, Bishop Mandagi was appointed as Archbishop of Merauke archdiocese.
