The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Archbishop John Barwa was born on June 1, 1955. He was ordained priest in 1985. Archbishop Barwa was consecrated coadjutor bishop of Rourkela on April 19, 2006. Hopeful of quelling violence against Christians in the Indian state of Orissa, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar on Feb. 11, 2011.
