Pope Francis named Bishop Vincent Nguyen Van Ban as bishop of Hai Phong and Apostolic Administrator of Ban Me Thuot on March 19, 2022.
Bishop Ban was born on Nov. 25, 1956, at Tuy Hoa parish in Quy Nhon diocese. He studied philosophy and theology at diocesan seminaries from 1968-1988 and worked in his home parish of Tuy Hoa until he was ordained a priest on Sept. 16, 1993.
After serving as an assistant priest in his home parish, he studied at Institut Catholique de Paris from 1996-2005, earning a master's degree in biblical theology.
After returning to his diocese, he taught at Sao Bien Major Seminary in the coastal Nha Trang city until his episcopal appointment on Feb. 21, 2009.
Bishop Ban was one of two Asian clergy invited by Pope Benedict XVI to attend the Oct. 5-26, 2008, Synod on the Word of God in Rome.
