The One-Body One-Spirit Movement (OBOS), the Seoul Archdiocese’s social arm, held its first Life and Culture Festival on October 8, in a bid to prevent suicide among young people around Myeongdong in Seoul. During the event, some 150 students and volunteers marched down the street and handed out balloons as a sign of sharing life. One of the participants, Anne Park Yoo-jin, 18, said “It is so much fun walking with people. I think that this outdoor campaign is more effective than an indoor event for preventing suicide.” National police said last June that South Korea has one of the highest overall suicide rates in the world. According to Statistics Korea, the teenage suicide rate in 2009 stood at 6.5 per 100,000, up from 4.6 per 100,000 the previous year.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
