A statue of Christ and a cross were vandalized yesterday at a Christian memorial site in Gujarat’s Kheda district. Unidentified vandals entered the Isu Smaraka memorial in Bhumel village and threw the statue into the hall. A cross was also removed from the building and thrown into the street, said Rohit Macwan, from Vadtal parish in Ahmedabad diocese, who filed a police complaint. Macwan said a Hindu Patel family living near the site woke up during the night and heard the smashing of the cross in the street. They subsequently alerted their Christian neighbors. Vijay Macwan, a Catholic activist, said witnesses saw a group of people fleeing the scene but could not identify any individuals. Bhumel village has about 300 Christian residents. Father Mayank Parmar, head of the Catholic social organization Drishti, appealed to all residents of the village to maintain peace and not be provoked by the incident. Police sub-inspector SV Vaghela said he had received a complaint over the vandalism and was investigating the matter, though no suspects have yet been identified.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
