Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi will undergo brain surgery Monday for cancer.

Shan was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006, and it was recently announced that cancerous cells have spread to his brain and lymph nodes. The 89-year-old cardinal will be treated with CyberKnife radiosurgery, a high-tech form of radiation treatment.

Kaohsiung diocese has appealed to Catholics to pray for their former bishop, and Catholics in Taiwan are calling for a “Pray for Cardinal Shan” campaign.

“The course of treatment will take three weeks. We invite friends of the cardinal, regardless of religious faith, to pray for him,” a circular from the Church said.

“Today’s medical technology is very advanced. Doctors tell me that the CyberKnife will cause no pain and will kill the malignant tumor quickly,” the cardinal said in a statement.
