Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s was chosen on Tuesday to head parliament’s newly formed “rule of law committee,” local sources said. The 15-member committee is tasked with ensuring that government officials, the media, MPs and judicial bodies act in accordance with Myanmar’s laws, according to Nanda Kyaw Swa, deputy speaker of the lower house of parliament. The newly formed parliamentary watchdog could be a prelude to the reform of the country’s legal system, which critics said was used by the former military junta to suppress its own people.
