The Catholic Senior Academy in Seoul celebrated its 30th anniversary yesterday, which coincided with this year’s Senior’s Day. Around 4,500 Catholic seniors from 67 parishes gathered for the event at the Olympic Park in Seoul. Tae-gon Andrew Park Kwang-soon, president of the academy, told the gathering that, “academy students have lived actively in their old age. We plan to develop more programs for the aged and increase the number of academies in parishes.” The Catholic Senior Academy was firstly established at Gonghang-dong Church in 1977 and approved by Seoul archdiocese in February, 1981. It and other academies around Korea were set up to help the elderly better cope with aging and to train them in leading others in Church activities. Some 11,000 students from 118 parishes have enrolled in senior academies in Seoul over the last 30 years.
