University pays tribute to teacher-priest

Rajshahi University in northwestern Bangladesh organized a prayer meeting on March 15 to honor Holy Cross Father Stephen G. Gomes who died in a road accident. The priest, the only Christian teacher at the second largest university in Bangladesh, had taught social work there from 1978-2001. “He was a perfect model of social worker. He had all the virtues of a good teacher,” said Syeda Afreena Mamun, his former student. Father Gomes, 75, former provincial of Holy Cross Fathers in Bangladesh, died in a road accident in northwestern Rajshahi district on March 9. He was hit by a reckless motorcycle rider while walking in the street in the morning. He passed away in the afternoon while being taken to capital Dhaka for better treatment. Father Gomes entered the congregation in 1962 and was ordained priest in 1967. During 1997-2006 he served as the first local Bengali provincial for the Holy Cross Fathers in Bangladesh. The Holy Cross congregation is the largest clerical society in Bangladesh with 66 priests. Six out of 10 Bangladeshi bishops are from the Holy Cross congregation. Every day around eight people die in road accidents in Bangladesh. In the last two years two priests were killed and several priests and Religious injured in road accidents.
