The numbers of organ transplants performed in China is estimated to be up to 100,000 per year and the main source of organs comes from prisoners of conscience says a detailed report released June 22.

"The (Communist Party) says the total number of legal transplants is about 10,000 per year. But we can easily surpass the official Chinese figure just by looking at the two or three biggest hospitals," said Canadian human rights attorney David Matas in a statement reported CNN.

The report Matas coauthored says the real figure is around 60,000 to 100,000 per year.

Matas along with Former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific David Kilgour and investigative journalist Ethan Gutmann authored the report into China's organ transplantation industry, dealing specifically with the use of prisoners of conscience as a organ source in China.

Their report follows the unanimous passing of a U.S. House Resolution on June 13 that expressed congressional "concern regarding persistent and credible reports of systematic, state-sanctioned organ harvesting from non-consenting prisoners of conscience in China, including from large numbers of Falun Gong practitioners and members of other religious and ethnic minority groups" such as underground Christians, Uighurs and Tibetans.
