A Catholic bishop called on President Benigno Aquino III today to postpone this year’s Earth Day celebrations because the day falls on Good Friday. “The Church is busy during Holy Week and its observance is more important,” said Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, who is chairman of the social action secretariat of the Catholic bishops’ conference. He said Earth Day cannot be celebrated on April 22, Good Friday, because it is a “holy day” for Catholics and suggested it be moved to another date because most people are reflecting and doing sacrifices on Good Friday. An environmentalist group agreed with Bishop Pabillo as it announced the holding of Earth Day activities a week ahead in deference to the observance of Good Friday. Kalikasan (Nature) People’s Network for the Environment said a series of Earth Day activities such as seminars, parades and contests will be held starting tomorrow. On April 26 the group proposes to mark “Global Day of Action” against nuclear reactors and power plants. PM13961.1649
