Sendai diocese, which was badly damaged during the Great East Japan Earthquake last year, received about 750 million yen (US$9.5 million) in donations through the end of March, a report from the diocese says.
The diocese has used the funds for physical repairs, to support Catholic families in need, as compensation for lost cars belonging to Catholics or employees of Catholic institutions, and as compensation for revenue losses incurred by diocesan institutions.
About half the total donations were from Catholic organizations. Foreign countries accounted for another 217 million yen said the report, released May 31.
More than 3 million yen is still to be distributed.
