The Pope has issued an urgent call to his 1.2 billion-member church to work – and, above all, to pray – for peace.

Amid a brewing Western conflict with Syria, Francis placed the usual reflection on this Sunday's readings aside to make an anguished 10-minute appeal "from deep within me" at today's noontime Angelus from the window of the Papal Apartment that now serves solely as his office.

As the centerpiece of the push, the pontiff has called for a "day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and across the entire world" next Saturday, 7 September – "the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace."

To underscore the effort, Francis added that an open event would be held then in St Peter's Square from 7pm until midnight Rome time (1-6pm Eastern, 10am-1pm Pacific). Across the globe, meanwhile, Papa Bergoglio requested today that "all the local churches" – Read: "the people and the bishop, all together" – follow suit "to gather and pray for this intention."
