Pope Francis on Feb. 8 appointed Father Shorot Francis Gomes as the new auxiliary bishop of Dhaka Archdiocese. He replaces Auxiliary Bishop Theotonius Gomes, who retired in April 2014.

Bishop-elect Gomes was born Dec. 15, 1965, in Hashnabad parish of Dhaka. He completed his primary and secondary education at Bandura Holy Cross High School.

He graduated from Notre Dame College in Dhaka and studied theology and philosophy at Holy Spirit National Major Seminary also in Dhaka. He was ordained a priest in 1990.

In 2002, he received a doctorate in moral theology from the Alphonsianum Academy in Rome.

He served as parish priest in various parishes in Dhaka, as the rector of Little Flower Minor Seminary and vice rector and rector of the National Major Seminary. Since 2012, he served as the vicar-general of Sylhet Diocese.

Dhaka is the only archdiocese among a total of eight dioceses in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
