Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today visited flood-hit Assam as India raised the official death toll to at least 77 in the northeastern state. Singh, who has recruited the army to tackle the clean-up operation, was joined by Congress Party chief Sonia Gandhi and Assam’s Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in surveying the worst affected areas from the air. The prime minister has announced 100,000 rupees (US$1,800) from his National Relief Fund to the families of each of those killed in the floods. A government report said 1.9 million people had been affected in all of Assam’s 27 districts after the Brahmaputra River and its 14 tributaries burst their banks. About half a million people have sought temporary shelter is government-run relief camps.
