There will be difficulties but Filipino workers in Europe can survive the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, said a leading Philippine bishop.

"They will not be much affected," said Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.

"There will be difficulties and hardships with this Brexit but our Filipino workers can manage everything," added the prelate.

Bishop Santos said Filipinos are known to be "responsible with their work, respectful with laws, and resilient amid storms in life."

"The working visas of Filipino workers in the UK are not issued by the European Union ... so they can remain in the UK and work there," Bishop Santos said.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union on June 23.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
