The Australian Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is to establish a sub-mission in Taiwan.

The order visited Taiwan twice in 2012 and 2015 but failed to establish a local association.

The establishment of the Taiwanese association is officially to be announced at the order's Southeast Asia meeting to be held in Singapore later in November. The order's main service is to help provide medical services for needy children and the elderly in rural mountain villages.

The Australian Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is taking help from the Taiwan Catholic Mission Foundation to establish its presence on the island. The foundation, like the Order of Malta, provides relief for social emergencies and assistance for the disadvantaged.

The Order of Malta was founded in 1048 and nowadays is a Catholic charitable organization with its headquarters in Rome. It has members and skilled volunteers around the world engaged in humanitarian service and is active in 120 countries caring for people in need.

The order is unique in that it has its own government and is a sovereign subject of International Law. It has diplomatic relations with over 100 nations and the European Union and permanent observer status with many international bodies such as the United Nations.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
