The Vatican believes that its top aid agency, Caritas Internationalis, needs new leadership to build a stronger Catholic identity within the organisation. “I think that each of us has limits. We can be competent in organising but lack some qualities for co-ordinating work or for reinforcing the Catholic identity,” said Cardinal Robert Sarah, who oversees the agency’s work through his role as president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum,  in reference to current Caritas secretary-general Lesley-Anne Knight, CNA reports. The Rome-based Caritas recently announced that the Vatican would not permit Knight to run for re-election to the position this May. Cardinal Sarah said: “we must recognize the work accomplished by Mrs Knight, but for today’s new challenges we need someone else.” He added that it is “normal that for new challenges other people are chosen that the confederation presents.” FULL STORY AND RELATED STORY Vatican charity offical says new challenges call for new leadership at Caritas (Catholic News Agency) Vatican targets Caritas (Eureka Street) PHOTO Carolus (Wikipedia / CC 3.0)

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
