People from across the nation are mourning the loss of two prominent Bangladeshis who died in a recent road accident.

Tareque Masud, 55, an internationally acclaimed film director, and Ashfaque Munier Mishuk, 52, a pioneering TV journalist, were killed along with three other people when their minibus collided head-on with a bus in Manikganj district, 64 kilometers south of the capital Dhaka on August 13.

Masud’s wife Catherine, an American producer, and four others were badly injured in the crash.

They were returning to Dhaka after a day’s shooting for Masud’s new film Kagojer Ful (The Paper Flower).

Masud’s 1995 documentary film, Muktir Gaan (Song of Freedom), explored events surrounding  Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in 1971, and his much-talked about 2002 film Matir Moina (The Clay Bird), co-written by his wife,  brought him an International Critics’ Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Matir Moina was also nominated for an Oscar that year in the foreign film category, a first for a Bangladeshi film.

Munier, meanwhile, was chief executive officer of ATN, the country's leading television news channel.

He had worked for a number of national and international TV channels including the BBC and the Canadian channel Real News. His funeral was held in Dhaka yesterday.

Details of Masud’s funeral will be decided when his wife recovers from her injuries.

“The deaths of Masud and Munier are an unbearable loss for Bangladeshi filmmaking and journalism,” said Joseph Kamol Rodriques, a singer.

Aurpo Stanley Gomes, a journalist from the Channel i television, said he had lost a mentor with the death of Munier.

“Mishuk Munier was who we looked up to in broadcast journalism. We, the young generation, learned a lot from him,” he said.
