The government yesterday assured business groups that a planned new mining policy would honor existing contracts.

"The thrust of the changes is for new ventures that are going to be started," Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima told reporters.

He said contrary to the fears of some industry leaders, the forthcoming policy guidelines on mining would improve the investment environment in the sector.
