Members of a higher-ranking caste cut off the nose of a 31-year-old dalit man in central India yesterday after seeing him on a motorcycle, police said.
Prakash Jhatav, a dalit or untouchable, is in stable condition at a hospital in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh state after being attacked by a dozen men from the Kushwaha caste, said police official Amit Singh.
Police have arrested three suspects and launched a search for others.
The men had earlier rebuked Jhatav for riding the bike and then saw him pass with a second rider in Jaipur village, Singh said.
The men stopped Jhatav, pulled him from the bike and beat him. When the victim cried for help, a Kushwaha man cut off his nose with a knife as other people watched, he said.
No one came to Jhatav’s rescue out of fear of the Kushwaha attackers, who left the victim on the road, Singh said. Relatives later took him to the hospital.
The Kushwaha caste dominates the village.
