Pope Francis confirms he will call a new consistory at the end of the year or early next year
Pope Francis waves as he arrives in Accumoli on Oct. 4, after an earthquake hit the area on Aug. 24, a disaster that claimed nearly 300 lives. Pope Francis made an emotionally charged visit to the Italian mountain communities devastated by the earthquake, praying silently amid the ruins and urging survivors to have faith in the future. Pope Francis has confirmed what many have been speculating for some time now — he will \"soon\" hold the third public consistory of his pontificate and create more cardinals.
During an in-flight interview on Oct. 2 on his way back to Rome from a weekend visit to Georgia and Azerbaijan, he indicated that the cardinal-making ceremony would likely be \"at the end of the year, [or] could be the beginning of next year.\"
He added that he wanted to give the red hat to men from a diverse array of countries in order to more fully reflect the global face of the Catholic Church.
