The victory of a Filipino woman in this year's Miss Universe competition should serve as an inspiration to thousands of Filipinos left devastated by a typhoon last week, the Philippine Catholic bishops' conference said Dec. 21.

"As our countrymen suffer from the onslaught of typhoon [Melor], let her win be an inspiration," conference spokesman, Father Jerome Secillano, said.

At least 20 people were killed and 24 others injured when the typhoon struck the disaster-prone country last week

Tens of thousands of people face the prospect of spending Christmas in temporary shelters or without power as a result of the typhoon.

"Pia Wurtzbach's feat is something that we should be proud of," Secillano said.

The 26-year old Wurtzbach won the crown during the Dec. 20 pageant held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas in the United States.

Controversy surrounded the announcement of the winner after pageant host Steve Harvey misread the card with the results and announced Colombia's Ariadna Guttierez had won.

What is important for Filipinos to take to heart is Wurtzbach's message that "beauty is nothing without a heart," the priest said.

Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
